drongen 2026
Set within a rather special plot along the meersen of Drongen, this project explores a spatial dialogue between intimacy and openness, architecture and landscape. Departing from the familiar Juma language, the design embraces the linearity of the site, extending deep into the plot and gradually unfolding towards the expansive views beyond.
The magnificent panorama over the surrounding fields is not merely framed, but carefully orchestrated as the final destination of a spatial sequence: a slow promenade through the house.
The street-facing façade is deliberately restrained and introverted, preserving privacy while lending the house a serene yet dignified presence. In contrast, the rear façade opens generously, with large, high windows that draw daylight deep into the interior while establishing an intimate relationship with the surrounding garden.
On the upper floor, windows are shaded by sun-protecting louvers, preventing overheating, offering a sense of shelter, and lending the design its distinctive character.
Elevated on a plinth in rough natural stone, the house gains a subtle sense of grounding. This material base flows seamlessly into the interior, blurring the line between indoor spaces and the surrounding landscape.
In the south-facing garden, the pool merges seamlessly with the sloping terrain, forming a quiet oasis that unites house and garden.
